Kilmacrennan Sewerage Scheme
Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Donegal County Council, is progressing with works to upgrade the Kilmacrennan Sewerage Scheme. Once complete, this project will ensure compliance with European and Irish wastewater legislation.
Kilmacrennan is currently served by wastewater infrastructure that is overloaded and can perform poorly. This can lead to partially treated wastewater being discharged to the River Lurgy in Kilmacrennan.
This €11 million investment will improve the drinking water quality, while also complying with the current Drinking Water Regulations. Furthermore, it will deliver additional capacity and ensure that wastewater is treated to a standard that protects the environment and complies with regulatory requirements. The new plant will serve a population equivalent of 1,250 people and will include flood protection measures and upgrades to the access road.
What does this the project involve?
- Decommission the underperforming and existing wastewater treatment plant in Kilmacrennan.
- Construct a temporary wastewater treatment plant for the interim of the project.
- Construct a new wastewater treatment plant in Kilmacrennan.
- Upgrade the existing sewer network, by replacing several hundred metres of the existing wastewater network.
- Implement flood protection measures and upgrades to the access road.
What are the benefits of this programme?
The upgraded sewerage scheme for Kilmacrennan will delivery three key benefits:
- Compliance with legal requirements by ensuring that wastewater is treated to a standard that meets regulatory criteria.
- Protection of the local environment, specifically the River Lurgy in Kilmacrennan.
- Provision for future growth, by ensuring that there is sufficient wastewater treatment capacity available for Kilmacrennan and surrounding areas.
