Green-Schools

Green-Schools is operated by An Taisce and is Ireland’s leading environmental management and award programme, working with primary and secondary schools across the country.

Uisce Éireann is committed to supporting the education and engagement of primary and secondary school students in water conservation and efficiency throughout Ireland. Following the drought of summer 2018, we are delighted to sponsor An Taisce's Green-Schools Water Theme for the sixth year running.

The water theme encourages primary and secondary school children to develop their awareness around water conservation and how to effectively manage this important resource in our homes and schools.

Last year, school children across Ireland saved over 389 million litres of water last year, the equivalent of over 450 million cups of coffee, thanks to their participation in this programme.

Theme for 2018

Following the recent drought and the severe impact it had on our raw water reserves, we have chosen ‘Conserve Water’ as this year's water theme, urging everyone to conserve water in every way possible.

Uisce Éireann will also co-sponsor the 25th Anniversary International Eco-Schools Conference in November in Cork, which is being hosted by An Taisce Green-Schools, where over 100 delegates from 70 countries will attend.

The Green-Schools water programme has an exciting academic year lined up with a series of Water Forums, Walk for Water events, Water Ambassador Support Sessions, a poster competition and a prestigious awards ceremony which will announce the Water Schools of the Year.

Competition

Our competition recognises the dedication and innovation shown by schools that are receiving the internationally recognised Green Flag for Water.

Green Flag Award

Schools awarded the Green Flag demonstrated how, on average, they decreased their water usage by one third. They achieved this through increasing user awareness and conservation, installation of water displacement devices, rainwater collection, and installing water saving devices.

Water forums

The 22 Water Forums are student-led interactive workshops which are delivered to schools participating in the Water Theme. The workshops include a range of fun-filled activities and provide an opportunity for students to share their ideas and knowledge as well as learning how to successfully carry out the water theme and future themes.
