Previous Updates

Due to industrial action arising from a dispute between the Unite Trade Union and a number of local authorities (LAs), Boil Water Notices may remain in place in areas of Waterford and Tipperary for several days and there continues to be the potential for disruption to water services in 12 local authority areas today Friday, 14 July, 2023.

Uisce Éireann, having reviewed the potential impact of strike action and the resulting risk to water quality, took steps earlier this week to protect public health, with several water treatment plants in Waterford and Tipperary going on precautionary Boil Water Notices (BWN) from midnight, Wednesday (00.01 Thursday).

The plants on precautionary BWNs in Waterford and Tipperary are;

  • Adamstown, Stradbally, Ballylaneen, Crotty’s Lake, Templetney, Glenary and Poulavanogue.
  • Galtee added Friday 14 due to raw water issues as a result of heavy rain (not strike related).

Other counties which could be impacted by the strike action and potential disruption to supply include Cork City, Cork County, Kerry, Fingal, SDCC, DLR, Louth, Carlow, Galway City and Wexford.

The industrial action effects on water and wastewater services are being added to by heavy rainfall. By mid-day on Friday, there are further impacts to customers across County Waterford and South Tipperary, with some localised impacts also in County Cork. There is little service impact elsewhere and Uisce Éireann is working to minimise disruption and mitigate impacts including providing support to vulnerable customers in the affected areas.

Our priority remains the protection of public health and the environment through the delivery of safe, secure and sustainable water services where possible during this dispute and we will do everything within our power to maintain safe water services where possible.

Tom Cuddy, Head of Operations for Uisce Éireann said: “There hasn’t been any major incidents in our plants or network overnight and we are continuing to work closely with management in the Local Authorities to ensure we can minimise and manage disruptions to water and wastewater services.

There have been a small number of burst and power outages in the last 24 hours and we would again appeal to Unite to ensure essential services are maintained and / or allow access to non-Unite members to access these locations."
