The Ring to reap the rewards of Uisce Éireann investment

28 September 2023

It will be a case of out with the old and in with the new this October in Tinnahinch as Uisce Éireann crews get to work to improve water quality and supply for the Carlow community.

Uisce Éireann’s leakage reduction crew will arrive at The Ring in Tinnahinch in the coming days to replace more than 1km of old water mains which is susceptible to leakage between The Ring and St Mullin’s Road.

Uisce Éireann’s Programme Manager Dave Murphy is looking forward to getting started.

Carrying out these works under the National Leakage Reduction Programme will greatly benefit the community. This section of water mains was prioritised for investment and replacement by Uisce Éireann due to its age and deteriorating condition, resulting in supply interruptions to homes and businesses. When completed, this project will improve water quality, significantly reduce leakage and provide local residents with a sustainable and more reliable water supply for generations to come."

"I would like to thank the local community in advance for their patience and cooperation during the works. We know based on previous experiences that the short-term inconvenience will be overshadowed by the long-term benefits."

Shareridge Civil Engineering will carry out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann and the project is excepted to be completed in December. Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers.

To deliver the works safely a stop/go system or traffic lights will be in place for the duration of the works. Diversions will be in place and local and emergency access will be maintained at all times.

The works may require some short term water supply interruptions but the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water interruptions.

We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient to local residents and motorists but we will make every effort to ensure the least disruption as possible,” said Dave.

Details of any supply interruptions associated with the project will be updated regularly on the Water Supply Updates section of the Uisce Éireann website.

Customers can also phone Uisce Éireann on 1800 278 278 if they have any questions.

The Carlow project forms part of Uisce Eireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme and will help us achieve our 2030 goal of a national leakage rate of 25%. The National Leakage Reduction team has made great strides since 2018 when the leakage rate stood at 46%.

Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the national Leakage Reduction Programme. We are investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030 - fixing leaks and replacing pipes to provide a more reliable water supply.
