Essential works taking place on Station Road, Portarlington

19 April 2023

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section.

Uisce Éireann wishes to advise customers in Portarlington Town and surrounding areas that they may experience a temporary, overnight disruption to their water supply, tomorrow night Thursday 20 April from 10pm until 3am. This is due to essential water network upgrade works taking place on Station Road.

During the works, customers in Portarlington Town may be impacted by reduced water pressure and water outages. Following these improvement it may take 2 to 3 hours for supply to return as water refills the network. The works have been planned to take place overnight to minimise disruption to homes and businesses and to ensure a consistent supply of water during the day.

As per best practice, most homes and businesses will have on-site water storage to provide a backup source of water for sanitation purposes. Uisce Éireann advises customers to familiarise themselves with their storage capacity.

Vulnerable customers who have registered with Uisce Éireann receive direct communications for planned and unplanned outages lasting more than four hours.

Joe Carrol, Uisce Éireann, explained “Uisce Éireann is committed to enabling communities across Laois to thrive by continuously upgrading and developing their critical infrastructure to support sustainable growth and development. These essential upgrade works are necessary to continue to provide Portarlington Town with clean, safe drinking water. We understand that this type of work may be disruptive to the local community which is why our experienced water services crews will work throughout the night to complete the works and restore normal water supply as quickly as possible.”

In order to complete the works safely and efficiently, traffic management in the form of a stop/go system will be in place along Station Road, by the Odlum’s Mill, while works are taking place. The works will be carried out by Ward & Burke Construction ltd. on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

Following this type of work, occasionally issues such as cloudy water (air bubbles), discolouration or internal airlocks may arise.
