Customers on Lough Mourne Water Supply reminded to conserve water

Uisce Éireann is continuing to see high levels of domestic, commercial and agricultural demand for treated drinking water on the Lough Mourne Water Supply in Donegal, as dry warm weather continues this week. We would like to thank the public and ask for their continued support to conserve water in their homes, businesses and on farms.

Uisce Éireann has been working closely with Donegal County Council to maximise the amount of treated drinking water available to all customers. With the high temperatures and increased agricultural, commercial, and tourist demand , our caretakers and plant operators have been taking every measure to ensure that supply can keep up with increases in demand. 

Demand throughout the Lough Mourne Water Supply network remains higher than previous years' average daily demand which is having a knock-on impact on Lough Mourne Reservoir and Corradooey reservoir levels. In particular the areas of Calhame (Killygordon), Leaght, Bohanboy, Mullingar and the Bower (Killygordon) are likely to be affected by interruptions to supply, reduced water pressure, and intermittent supply over the next 48 hours. 

Alternative water supplies in the form of water bowser and a bulk tanker will be located at Callaghan’s in Bohanboy, and Lyttles, Mullingar Killygordon from 12.30pm today. Customers are reminded to use their own containers when taking water from the tanker and to boil and cool the water before consumption as a precautionary measure. 

Seamus O’Brien, Uisce Éireann, commented: “Uisce Éireann understands the inconvenience this outage may cause. We are appealing to the public on the Lough Mourne Water Supply network to be mindful of how they use their water at home, as the temperatures remain high. We are appealing to customers to help conserve water by not running taps needlessly, taking showers instead of baths and to postpone using dishwashers and washing machines where possible. Vulnerable customers who have registered with Uisce Éireann receive direct communications from us for planned and unplanned outages lasting more than four hours.
