Colla Road, Schull Water Mains Replacement

National Leakage Reduction Programme

Uisce Éireann, in partnership with Cork County Council, has replaced ageing, problematic water mains on Colla Road, Schull, County Cork to provide a more reliable water supply and reduce high levels of leakage.

The works involved the replacement of over 785 metres of aged problematic water mains with new modern pipes. The programme to replace the water mains on Colla Road will commence in mid-July. These works were carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.

The section of works took place on Colla Road from Main Street Schull to the junction of Colla Road and Barry’s Road. The works also involved laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’ water supply. Where the existing service connections on the public side are lead these were replaced as part of this improvement work.

The works were carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Ward and Burke Limited and were completed by end of August.

What are the benefits of the works?

The benefits of the leakage reduction works include:

  • A Reliable Water Supply – Replacement of water mains and service connections will reduce the instances of bursts and water outages and will ensure a reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area.
  • Reduced Leaks – Replacement of water mains and service connections will eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.
  • Improved Operation and Maintenance – These works will deliver cost savings by providing improved water network operation that will require less maintenance in the future.

Traffic Management and Road Closure

In order to complete the works safely and efficiently traffic management and a road closure are required for the two phases of construction.

Traffic management in the form of a stop-go system will be in place from the commencement of works to Friday 29 July.

Works will be paused from close of business on Friday 29 July to Monday morning 8 August. Works will then be completed under a road closure from Monday 8 August to Friday 26 August.

The recommended diversion for south bound traffic is to proceed west to Corthna and take Barry’s Road to the Colla Road/Barry’s Road junction. Local access at either end of the works will be maintained alongside emergency services access.

Will customers be affected by the works?

The works may involve some short-term water interruptions and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water interruptions.

We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause.
