Water improvement works in full flow in Limerick

15 November 2023

Securing the water supply across Limerick remains a top priority for Uisce Éireann as the intensive campaign continues to drive down leakage and improve the water supply to homes and businesses.

Crews will be arriving in Fedamore in the coming days to get to work replacing almost 800 metres of damaged water mains with new modern pipes.

Highlighting the importance of these upgrades, Kevin Murphy, Leakage Reduction Programme Regional Lead with Uisce Éireann said: “Replacing these old and damaged pipes is a first step in tackling low water pressure, bursts, and leakage issues which have been affecting homes and businesses in Fedamore. The new pipes will not only reduce the number of water interruptions but will provide security of supply for generations of local people.

On behalf of Uisce Éireann, I would like to thank the local community for their patience and cooperation as this project continues to progress. Based on previous experiences, we know that the short-term inconvenience will be overshadowed by the long-term benefits,” he said.

The works will take place from Fedamore Church to a point 100m beyond the junction with the R511 at the eastern side of Fedamore. The works will be carried out by Ward & Burke Construction Ltd and will be completed by February.

Areas of works will be limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers. Traffic management will be in place where water mains are being constructed however the community can be assured that local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times.

To deliver these works safely and efficiently, a road closure will be in place along the L1143-209. The road closure times will be in place 24-hours a day from 8:00am on Monday 20 November to 6:00pm on Friday 15 December. Traffic management will also be in place in the form of traffic lights on the L1143-209 and L1143-489 for the duration of the works.

This project forms part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme and will help us achieve our 2030 goal of a national leakage rate of 25%. The National Leakage Reduction team has made great strides since 2018 when the leakage rate stood at 46%.

Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the national Leakage Reduction Programme. We are investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030 - fixing leaks and replacing pipes to provide a more reliable water supply.
