Cork City Water Mains Rehabilitation

This €15.8 million investment is needed to improve water supply and quality for homes and businesses in Cork City.

The project will see the large-scale replacement and rehabilitation of over 27km of old, corroded water mains in Cork City and will also reduce water leakage by over 18 million litres of water per week on completion. Existing sections of water mains will be increased and upgrades to service connections will be carried out as part of the project.

Why is this project needed?

Leaking water mains

40% of pipes tested in the Cork City area had high levels of corrosion, which causes pipes to leak and burst frequently. This affects the supply and pressure of water for customers.

Build-up in pipes

Many of the old water mains in Cork City have up to 80% of their internal walls blocked by build-up. This significantly reduces the capacity of water to flow through the pipes, leading to reduced water pressure and water discolouration.

What is involved in this project?

  1. Replacing 9.3 km of old, leaking water main pipes with new polyethylene (heavy duty plastic) and ductile iron pipes as part of Phase 1 of the project. The area mainly affected stretches from Commons Road, Blackpool to Pope’s Quay, North Mall and Blarney Street.
  2. Replacing and upgrading communal or shared property water services connections located in backyards or on private property with individual service connections.
  3. Replace water mains that have significant build up on their internal walls.

What are the next steps?

The main pipelaying works are nearing completion. Focus is now turning on completing the service connections.
