Greater Dublin Drainage (GDD) is a project to develop a new regional wastewater treatment facility for greater Dublin.

This project is needed in order to meet projected demand for wastewater treatment and to facilitate the continued social and economic development of greater Dublin (including Dublin and parts of Kildare, Meath and Wicklow).

A sites assessment and route selection process has identified the preferred project solution as:

  • an underground orbital sewer from Blanchardstown to Clonshaugh and two new pumping stations
  • a new regional wastewater treatment facility at Clonshaugh
  • an outfall pipe from the wastewater treatment facility discharging to the Irish Sea

Project Status

Irish Water is progressing the environmental studies required to prepare a planning application for the GDD project.

It is anticipated that an application for planning consent will be made to the independent planning authority, An Bord Pleanála, in the first half of 2018.

Irish Water is also undertaking a related project to develop a Regional Biosolids Storage Facility for greater Dublin. We have identified a preferred site for the new storage facility at Newtown/Kilshane, Dublin 11. A public consultation on the preferred site and associated environmental assessments is underway until 10th October 2017. Find out more in our Biosolids section.
