The Irish Expert Body on Fluorides and Health, which operates under the guidance of the Department of Health, monitors new and emerging issues on fluoride and its effects on health and related matters. The Expert Body advises that the balance of scientific evidence worldwide confirms that water fluoridation, at the optimal level, does not cause any ill effects and continues to be safe and effective in protecting the oral health of all age groups.

The effects of fluoridation on health and related matters are kept under constant review. The requirements for fluoridating public water supplies are set out in the Health (Fluoridation of Water Supplies) Act 1960 and the Fluoridation of Water Supplies Regulations 2007 [S.I. No 42 of 2007]. As the water service authority, Irish Water is working with the HSE to implement State policy on fluoridation.
