Water for growth
Making sure the water we rely on is ready for the lives we’re living and the region we’re building.
Water for Growth is Uisce Éireann’s major investment programme for the Eastern Region. With an initial investment of over €500 million, it brings together 30 coordinated projects to be delivered over the next 10 years, focused on strengthening the existing water supply network and supporting the region’s continued growth.
The programme is about investing in the infrastructure people already rely on every day, upgrading and improving it so water services can remain reliable as demand increases. It is practical, long-term investment to help keep water flowing for homes, communities and businesses across the region.

Why Water for Growth is needed
Water for Growth responds to a clear challenge.
Across the Greater Dublin Area, water supply is operating at or near full capacity on many days of the year. As the region grows, that puts more pressure on infrastructure that is already working hard to keep pace.
At the same time, much of the Eastern Region’s water supply is heavily dependent on the River Liffey. That reduces flexibility when demand rises or when disruption happens somewhere in the network.
Water for Growth responds to these pressures through targeted investment across the existing system, improving reliability, strengthening capacity and helping support the the region over the next decade
What Water for Growth delivers
Water for Growth brings together a wide range of critical works across the region. This includes upgrades to treatment plants, major trunk mains, new and improved storage, and strategic network connections, all designed to strengthen the infrastructure that keeps water flowing every day.
Alongside these projects, Uisce Éireann is continuing to protect supply through leakage reduction and water conservation measures.
Together, these investments will help modernise the network, improve reliability and support the homes, communities and businesses that depend on it.
A programme across the region
Water for Growth brings together projects across the Eastern Region as part of one connected programme.
That includes upgrades at Leixlip Water Treatment Plant and Ballymore Eustace, major pipeline works such as the North City Arterial Main, strategic storage projects including Saggart Reservoir and Peamount Reservoir, and a range of other works to strengthen treatment, storage and network connections across the region.
Some projects increase capacity. Some improve storage. Some strengthen how water moves around the network. Together, they help keep supply reliable as the region continues to grow.
Delivered over the next decade
Water for Growth will be delivered over the next 10 years through phased investment and coordinated delivery.
A number of projects are already in progress, at advanced planning and design stage, or under construction. Others will follow as the programme moves forward.
This phased approach allows the network to be strengthened in a practical and coordinated way, while water services continue for the people and places that rely on them every day.
Investing now, while planning for the future
Water for Growth is focused on the investment needed now.
It is about strengthening the infrastructure already in place, improving reliability, and helping make sure there is capacity in the system to support growth across the Eastern Region over the next decade.
Alongside this, the Water Supply Project for the Eastern and Midlands Region remains part of the longer-term planning for future water supply. Together, this work will help make sure the region has the water infrastructure it needs, both now and into the future.
Working with communities
Where works affect roads, access or nearby properties, Uisce Éireann will continue to engage with local communities and businesses, provide information in advance, and work to minimise disruption wherever possible.
Programme highlight: Leixlip Water Treatment Plant
As part of the Water for Growth programme, Uisce Éireann is delivering a €64 million upgrade at Leixlip Water Treatment Plant, Ireland’s second largest water treatment facility. Leixlip supplies water to more than 620,000 people across the Greater Dublin Area. Phase 2 of the upgrade is now complete, with further phases planned.
This work will help strengthen the security and reliability of water supply at a key part of the network, and shows the kind of investment Water for Growth is delivering on the ground.
