Srowland Water Treatment Plant Upgrade
Uisce Éireann is progressing a project to upgrade Srowland Water Treatment Plant.
Uisce Éireann is progressing plans to upgrade the water supply infrastructure at Srowland Water Treatment Plant in Athy. This €4 million investment, benefitting a population of 81,553 will safeguard water supply for homes and businesses in the Barrow Regional Public Water Supply (PWS) and partially supplies Barrow/Poulaphouca Blend PWS, Rathangan PWS and Monasterevin PWS.
The current water scheme is included on the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Remedial Action List (RAL), which identifies water supplies that need improvement.
Veolia Ireland Limited will carry out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

What are the benefits of these works?
The upgrade works carried out as part of this project will:
- Ensure a secure and resilient water supply to Barrow Regional Water Supply and surrounding areas.
- Ensure the cryptosporidium barrier is maintained to protect drinking water.
- Improve the efficiency of the facility.
- Remove the supply from the EPA’s Remedial Action List (RAL).
- Ensure compliance with national and EU regulations relating to the provision of drinking water.
What’s involved in this project?
The upgrade to Srowland Water Treatment Plant will involve:
- The upgrade of UV disinfection units
- The installation of Flow Meters on existing filters
- The installation of a Hydrocarbon Monitor
What are the next steps?
The project is currently under construction and is expected to complete in Q3 2026.
