Inishannon Trunk Water Mains Replacement

Leakage Reduction Programme

Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Cork County Council, has replaced over 7kms of problematic water mains to improve security of supply, reduce high levels of leakage and improve water quality in the Ballinhassig, Fivemilebridge and Ballea areas.

This work is being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s Leakage Reduction Programme, which will see €500m invested nationally to tackle problematic pipes and leakage in Ireland’s ageing water network.

Benefits

  • A Reliable Water Supply – Replacement of water mains will reduce the instances of bursts and water outages and will ensure a reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area.
  • Reduced Leaks – Replacement of water mains will eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.
  • Improved Operation and Maintenance – These works will deliver cost savings by providing improved water network operation that will require less maintenance in the future.

Steps

  • These works will commence on Monday, 21 September 2020 and are part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme. The works will be carried out by Ward & Burke Construction Ltd., on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
  • The initial section between Ballinhassig and Fivemilebridge is expected to be complete by the end of November 2020.
  • Works from Fivemilebridge to Ballea will commence on 2 November and are expected to be complete by end of January 2021.
  • The works will take place on the R613 from Ballinhassig Village approximately 7km to the east toward Carrigaline.
  • In order to complete the work safely and efficiently, a stop-go system will be in place.
  • During mid-term break, a full road closure will be in place for the 600m section west of Fivemilebridge, along the R613 Ballinhassig Road.
  • On completion of the 600m section west of Fivemilebridge, works will return to the remainder of the 2.1km to the east of Ballinhassig until the estimated completion date of that section of end of November 2020.
  • Works were completed in November 2020.

Will customers be affected by the works?

Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers. Traffic management in the form of a stop-go system will be in place during this time. Local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times.

The works may involve some short-term water shut offs and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours notice prior to any planned water shut offs.

We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause.
