Athenry to benefit from more secure water supply as leakage reduction works begin

At Uisce Éireann, we’re committed to providing a reliable water supply for everyone in the community. To help make that happen, we’re getting underway with works to replace old and damaged cast iron water mains in Athenry, Co. Galway.
Works have commenced this week and will involve the replacement of more than 250m of ageing water mains along Barrack Street, Abbey Row, Caheroyn Road and the Crescent, strengthening the local water network and helping to reduce disruption for homes and businesses.
Welcoming the project, Enda Mac Namara of Uisce Éireann said that the replacement of these deteriorating water mains will improve water quality and the resilience of the network, eliminating existing leaks and reducing the amount of clean water lost into the ground.
“Every pipe we replace is guided by one clear goal: providing a water supply people can count on. These improvements make a difference every single day, in every tap, every home and throughout the community. By focusing on delivering a more reliable supply, we’re helping to build a stronger, more resilient water service for the people of Athenry now and for generations to come,” Enda said.
The project is being delivered by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann with completion expected this summer.
Customers can phone Uisce Éireann on 1800 278 278 if they have any questions about the project or visit the Water Supply Updates section of the Uisce Éireann website for regular updates.
We have measures in place to keep disruption to an absolute minimum but to protect the public and our crews, a traffic management system will be in place during the works in the form of a stop / go system. Local and emergency traffic will always be maintained.
If short-term planned water disruptions are required, customers will receive at least 48 hours’ notice before any interruption.
This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann works every day to reduce leaks. With more than 65,000 km of underground pipes nationally- enough to circle the earth one and a half times - fixing leaks can be complicated. Many are hidden, but we are making progress: national leakage is now at its lowest ever, reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36%.
