Newmarket-on-Fergus Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade and Outfall Relocation

Uisce Éireann is commencing works to upgrade Newmarket-on-Fergus Wastewater Treatment Plant and provide a new outfall to the river Rine in Co. Clare.

Uisce Éireann is commencing works to upgrade the Newmarket-on-Fergus Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) to support existing and future population and economic growth, following an investment of over €14 million.

Located just over 6km away from Shannon town, Newmarket-on-Fergus WWTP has a design capacity of 5,000 PE.

The wastewater treatment plant in Newmarket-on-Fergus is currently discharging into Lough Gash Turlough.

These works will ensure wastewater is treated appropriately now and into the future, with a new outfall location into the River Rine. This upgrade will support economic and population growth in Newmarket-on-Fergus, while also improving the health and integrity of the environment.

Construction will commence in February 2026 and is expected to be completed in 2028. Glanua is carrying out these works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

What is involved with this project?

The works will include:

  • Upgrading the existing wastewater treatment plant
  • Construction of a new outfall to the River Rine
  • Construction of a 4.4km new pipeline
  • Construction of new below-ground Final Treated Effluent pumping station
  • Construction of new storm storage tank
  • Advanced Treatment process upgrades

Will customers be affected by the works?

As part of this upgrade, works will include the construction of approx. 4.4km of pipeline from the existing Newmarket on Fergus wastewater treatment plant through part of Kilnasoolagh Park and along the R458 Regional Road to the outfall to the river at Latoon North.

We will be working in short sections, so that it is least impactful to our customers. To safely and efficiently deliver the project, traffic management will be in place in the form of a mixture of a stop and go system, traffic signals and single lane closures.

Lane closures at the various works locations will be in place along the R458 from the Kilnasoolagh Park Junction L3202 to the Dromoland East Roundabout from mid-February to July 2026.

Traffic management will also be in place in part of Kilnasoolagh Park for the duration of these works at that location.

We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause.

What are the benefits of this project?

  • Modernise and improve the performance of the existing wastewater treatment plant
  • Improve the health and integrity of the environment
  • Protect the water quality and conservation habitats in River Rine and Lough Gash.
  • Provide sufficient capacity to facilitate future population and industrial growth
  • Ensure compliance with Irish and EU legislation now and into the future
  • Ensure compliance with national and EU regulations relating to the treatment of wastewater.
