Kilkenny Regional Water Supply Scheme
Uisce Éireann has completed works to upgrade the water supply to Kilkenny City.
Uisce Éireann has completed works on the Kilkenny Regional Water Supply Scheme to improve the security of water supply across Kilkenny City and surrounding areas. This project now complete, is benefitting a population of approximately 28,000. Glanua delivered these works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
Previously, Kilkenny City and surrounding areas were served by two water treatment plants (WTPs) - Troyswood and Radestown. As part of this project the Troyswood WTP has undergone a significant upgrade, resulting in more robust water treatment facilities. This is a list which identifies drinking water supplies that are at risk of failing to consistently supply safe, clean drinking water. As part of the project, the Radestown WTP was taken out of operation and its customers are now supplied by the upgraded Troywood WTP.
What are the benefits of this completed project?
- Ensuring a safe, secure and reliable water supply for Kilkenny City and its surrounding areas.
- Enabling future growth and development in the city and surrounding areas.
What was involved in the delivery of this project?
The completed project has increased capacity at the Troyswood treatment plant, establishing it as the primary water treatment facility for Kilkenny City. A new 2.9km water main from Troyswood to the Radestown site is now connected to the existing service reservoirs, allowing the Radestown WTP to be decommissioned.
This project involved the following works:
- Construction of new raw water intake and pumping facility at Troyswood.
- Upgrade of the existing Troyswood WTP facilities.
- Construction of a new 2.9km water main between Troyswood WTP and the Radestown Reservoirs.
- Decommissioning of the Radestown WTP and associated raw water sources, along with upgrade works at Radestown Reservoirs.
- Site improvement works at Troyswood WTP including fencing, access roads, lighting, drainage and landscaping.
Other works carried out in the area:
These works follow on from Leakage Reduction Programme works completed in 2020, replacing aging watermains across the City. Smaller scale works have also been completed at Troyswood WTP, which replaced an outdated pressure regulation valve that was causing major pressure issues across the network. These works have now mitigated against unplanned water supply outages, high levels of leakage and repair costs.
