Hospital Wastewater Treatment Plant
Uisce Éireann is commencing works to construct a new wastewater treament plant in Hospital, Co. Limerick with an investment of €21.5 million.
This project is being delivered as part of Uisce Éireann’s Small Towns and Villages Growth Programme. Projects in this programme are designed to support Growth and development in towns and villages throughout the country, while protecting the environment and ensuring a continued supply of safe drinking water.
The current treatment plant is operating well beyond its design capacity of 500 population equivalent (PE) serving approximately 1,145 PE. A new treatment plant will be constructed increasing capacity to 2,500 PE, ensuring environmental compliance and providing capacity for future growth and development.
This project is due to commence in December 2025 and will be being delivered by Glanua Ireland Ltd. on behalf of Uisce Éireann with completion expected in 2028. Upon completion it will improve the capacity and performance of the existing wastewater infrastructure in the area and reduce the risk of storm overflows.
What is involved as part of this project?
- Construction of New Wastewater Treatment Plant
- Increasing the treatment capacity from 500 to 2,500 PE
- Upsizing incoming sewers and removal of existing storm water overflows
- Construction of a new stormwater storage system and associated incoming sewer network and pipework to limit impact of future flooding events
- New outfall to discharge treated effluent to the River Mahore
- Sustainable sludge drying reed beds, reducing energy requirements and transport movements in the locality
- Solar ground mounted panels to provide on-site energy generation
What are the benefits of the works?
The upgraded wastewater treatment plant will bring benefits to the area including:
- Improve water quality in the River Mahore.
- Facilitate social and economic growth, including planned residential development.
- Ensure the required capacity of the wastewater infrastructure to support future development in the area.
- Improve the capacity of the existing sewers, improving performance and reducing the risk of sewer flooding in the area.
Will customers be affected by the works?
Construction works will be largely confined to the area around the existing wastewater treatment plant to the rear of Herbertstown GAA grounds. A site entrance will be located on Millfarm road and there will be an increase in construction related traffic in this area.
