Works progressing to deliver essential leakage reduction works in Celbridge

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section

Uisce Éireann is progressing works to replace old and damaged water mains between Celbridge and Newcastle. As part of this essential project, a temporary road closure is required to safely carry out the next phase of works in Celbridge.

These works form part of the Celbridge to Newcastle water mains replacement project, which is being delivered under Uisce Éireann’s national Leakage Reduction Programme. This project has been prioritised due to network issues in Celbridge, and the new, upsized pipeline will also cater for future developments in the area.

To allow works to be carried out safely and efficiently, the following temporary road closure will be in place:

  • Along R405, Hazelhatch Road, Celbridge, between Shinkeen Road and Newtown Road from Wednesday, 6 May until Wednesday, 1 July 2026.

Clearly signposted diversion routes will be in place for the duration of the closure, and local and emergency access will be maintained at all times.

Speaking about the works, Nicola Butler, Uisce Éireann, said: “These works are required to address the repeated network issues in Celbridge and to enable future development in both Celbridge and Newcastle. We understand that temporary road closures can be inconvenient, and we, along with our contractors GMC, will ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum. We thank the community for their patience while this vital work is being carried out."

This project is being delivered on behalf of Uisce Éireann by GMC Utilities Group Ltd. and it is expected to be completed in 2027.

Customers can phone Uisce Éireann on 1800 278 278 if they have any questions about the project or visit the Water Supply Updates section of the Uisce Éireann website for regular updates.

This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann works every day to reduce leaks. With more than 65,000 km of underground pipes nationally- enough to circle the earth one and a half times - fixing leaks can be complicated. Many are hidden, but we are making progress: National leakage is now at its lowest level ever, reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% today.
