22 January 2024

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section.

Uisce Éireann is working to address any supply interruptions to customers as a result of the impacts of Storm Isha on water treatment infrastructure in Leitrim. Our priority is the provision of clean safe drinking water to communities and the safety of water services staff who work to make that happen.

A number of our plants and pumping stations, particularly in the North West of the country have been impacted by power outages or poor raw water quality due to flooding.

Water services staff have been mobilised around the country to make the necessary repairs at plants and on the water network. We are also liaising closely with the ESB to prioritise the restoration of power to plants affected by electricity outages with backup generators in place at our plants to maintain supplies in many areas.

Anthony Skeffington, Uisce Éireann’s Regional Operations Manager, said: “Uisce Éireann has implemented its emergency response processes and is working closely with National Emergency Co-ordination Committee, Local Authorities, ESB and other partners to co-ordinate the national response address any impact on water supplies due to Storm Isha. For areas where supplies that have been impacted, Uisce Éireann crews are on the ground working to restore production as soon as it is possible.

“Some Uisce Éireann water supplies across the county have been impacted by power outages arising from Storm Isha particularly in Drumshanbo, Ballinamore, Kesh, Fenagh, Mohill, Carrigallen and Cloone in South Leitrim. In North Leitrim Kinlough, Tullaghan and Castelgal have been impacted, and the surrounding group water schemes fed off the public water supplies.  Supply has been returned to a number of areas around the county but a significant number of customers will continue to be affected throughout today while we work to restore normal water supply as quickly as possible.

We also appealing to customers to check for bursts and overflowing troughs on their own properties and turning these off where they are found. Our crews are on the ground working to tackle leaks and maximise our treatment capacity and we are asking the public for their support to help reduce the overall demand by preventing avoidable loss of water and conserving water.”

“We would like to thank all the crews who have been working overnight and through the morning to carry out repairs throughout the network. We also want to thank impacted customers for their patience as we work to restore normal supplies. The Uisce Éireann website water.ie is updated regularly with local outage information and our contact centre is available 24/7 on 1800 278 278 to support our customers.

Customers are urged to check water.ie and or report loss of service or visible leaks to assist Uisce Éireann to identify bursts. Live updates on outages are also available on Twitter @IWCare.

Uisce Éireann is continuing to address any outstanding supply interruptions to customers as a result of the impacts of Storm Isha on water treatment infrastructure. There are 11 water supply schemes, impacting approximately 35,000 people nationwide currently experiencing water disruption as a result of the storm.

The majority of the impacted plants are in the North West of the country particularly in Mayo, Donegal, Leitrim and Cavan. Parts of the South-East are also experiencing disruption. We also continue to closely monitor the Greater Dublin area following record demand for water in recent days. There has been a significant increase in bursts across the region and there may be some localised disruption as repairs are carried out.

Water services staff are working around the country to make the necessary repairs at plants and on the water network. We are also liaising closely with the ESB to prioritise the restoration of power to plants that remain affected by electricity outages, with backup generators in place at our plants to maintain supplies in many areas.

Tom Cuddy, Uisce Éireann’s head of Operations, said: “Uisce Éireann continues to work closely with local authorities, the ESB and other partners to address any impact on water supplies due to Storm Isha. For areas where supplies have been impacted, our crews are on the ground working to restore production as soon as it is possible. Alternative power supplies and generators have been deployed in some locations to get plants back into production while we are also liaising closely with the ESB to prioritise the restoration of power to plants affected by electricity outages.

“Where power has been restored or repairs carried out, it may take a number of hours for normal supply to return to all customers, particularly those in elevated areas on at the ends of the network. Where possible customers are asked to conserve water to enable supplies to recover. We want to thank impacted customers for their patience as we work to restore normal supplies.

Uisce Éireann is working as part of the National Emergency Committee (NEC) to minimise the risk of supply interruptions to customers and to assess the impacts of Storm Isha on water treatment plants. Uisce Éireann’s priority is the provision of clean safe drinking water to communities and the safety of water services staff who work to make that happen.

While there has been no impact on most of our plants the severe weather may impact on supplies in a number of locations due to heavy rainfall and high winds causing power outages at water treatment plants and pumping stations. To date the most impacted areas are in Mayo, Donegal and South-East, where several supplies are at risk due to storage levels locally running low with treatment plants offline. We also continue to closely monitor the Greater Dublin area especially North Wicklow following record demand last week for water. The weather conditions saw freezing ground and subsequent thaw cause a significant increase in bursts and a decrease in treated water storage for the region.

Water services staff will be mobilised around the country to make the necessary repairs at plants and on the water network when it is safe to do so. We are also liaising closely with the ESB to prioritise the restoration of power to plants affected by electricity outages with backup generators in place at our plants to maintain supplies in many areas.

Tom Cuddy, Uisce Éireann’s head of Operations, said: “Uisce Éireann has implemented its emergency response processes and is working closely with National Emergency Co-ordination Committee, Local Authorities, ESB and other partners to co-ordinate the national response and to ensure that the risk to service interruption because of Storm Isha is minimised. In most cases water is still in supply with Uisce Éireann aiming to restore production before any interruptions are experienced by customers.

“We would like to assure our customers that we will be working as a matter of priority to restore any supplies should they be impacted by the storm once it is safe to do so. The Uisce Éireann website water.ie is updated regularly with local outage information and our contact centre is available 24/7 on 1800 278 278 to support our customers.
