Tipperary to benefit from almost 34km of upgraded water mains as significant upgrades completed
Uisce Éireann has successfully completed almost 34 kilometres of water mains upgrades across Tipperary, with the works providing stronger and more reliable water supplies, improved water quality and a reduction in leakage levels across the Premier County.
The works were carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme (LRP) which aims to safeguard Ireland’s supplies of clean drinking water by replacing old water mains and driving down leakage on the network.
As a result of these works, residents and businesses across Tipperary will benefit from a more secure water supply and a reduced risk of disruptive maintenance works being required in the future.
The works include over 5.5km of watermain which was replaced between Killenaule Reservoir and Coolbawn Cross, which will reduce leakage and improve water quality. This brings the total amount of mains upgraded in this area alone to 18km, following the replacement of 13km in the area recently.
Separately, more than 8km km of old and damaged water mains were replaced between Ardloman and Shronell, to ensure a more reliable water supply for the community with fewer leaks.
Works also took place in Carrick On Suir where residents and businesses have benefitted from the replacement of 1.7km of old, damaged cast iron water mains with new modern pipes. Meanwhile 5.6km of aged cast iron water mains was also replaced between in Ballypatrick Village and N24 National Road. These works in both Carrick on suir and in Ballypatrick will improve water quality, reduce the frequency of bursts, minimise future disruptions, and provide a more secure water supply for these local community.
Outlining the benefits of the works, Uisce Éireann’s Portfolio manager Dave Murphy said completion of the works across the county is another step in improving Tipperary’s water network.
“The importance of replacing such ageing and damaged water mains in these areas cannot be underestimated. The works will significantly improve drinking water quality, reduce the loss of water and provide a more secure water supply for these local community. I would like to thank the local community and elected representatives for their support and patience during the delivery of these essential projects."
"The replacement of these old pipes will have a positive impact on the daily lives of the local community. Operational and maintenance costs will also be reduced as the network operation will require less maintenance."
"We have made great progress, but we’re not finished yet. Uisce Éireann will continue to look at ways to supply smarter and reduce leakage across the county.”
These projects are examples of how Uisce Éireann is working every day to reduce leakage. Fixing leaks can be complicated. We have over 65,000 km of water pipes underground in Ireland—enough to circle the earth one and a half times. Most leaks aren’t visible, resulting in precious water being lost, but we are making progress. Leakage levels are now at their lowest ever, with water loss reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% nationally.
