Targeted leak detection works helping to reduce water loss and strengthen supply in Waterford
Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section
Uisce Éireann is continuing efforts to safeguard the water supply in Waterford with targeted leak detection works taking place overnight this Tuesday. The works are an essential part of an ongoing programme to reduce leakage, strengthen the water network and ensure a more reliable and sustainable supply for homes and businesses across the city.
To allow crews to carry out these works safely and efficiently, a planned overnight interruption will be required on Tuesday night from 12:00 am to 5:00 am. During this time, customers in the following areas may experience supply interruptions or reduced pressure: Ballybeg, Kilbarry, Six Cross Roads and Templars Hall.
Leak detection plays a vital role in protecting Waterford’s drinking water network. By locating and repairing hidden leaks, Uisce Éireann can reduce water loss, improve pressure and performance across the system, and support long term resilience as demand continues to grow. These works are carried out at night specifically to minimise disruption to communities and businesses.
Speaking about the programme, Dave Murphy, Portfolio Manager, said: “Leak detection is one of the most effective ways we can strengthen Waterford’s water network. By identifying leaks early and carrying out targeted repairs, we’re protecting valuable water resources and ensuring a more reliable supply for customers into the future. We know overnight works can be inconvenient, and we appreciate the patience and support of the local community as our crews complete these essential improvements.”
As watermains return to normal operation on Tuesday morning, supply should gradually restore to all impacted areas.
Works will be delivered by Shareridge on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann is working to reduce leaks every day. Fixing leaks can be complicated. We have over 65,000 km of water pipes underground in Ireland – enough to circle the earth one and a half times. Most leaks aren’t visible, resulting in precious water being lost but we are making progress. Leakage levels are now at their lowest ever with water loss reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% nationally.
Uisce Éireann is responsible for delivering public drinking water and wastewater services for the people of Ireland. We are committed to enabling communities to thrive by continuously upgrading and developing critical infrastructure to support sustainable growth and development, providing safe drinking water, and enhancing the environment.
