Stronger, more reliable water supply on the way for Carlow
Supporting growth and development while improving water services for homes and businesses
Uisce Éireann is progressing essential water network upgrades in Carlow to support growth and development in the area while delivering a stronger, more reliable water supply for homes and businesses.
Delivered as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme, the works involve the replacement of approximately 1.8km of problematic watermains with new, modern pipes.
The existing pipes were prone to bursts and leaks, which led to supply interruptions and the loss of treated drinking water. By upgrading this infrastructure, the works will help eliminate these issues, reduce the loss of clean drinking water and strengthen the performance of the local water network.
The upgrades will also support future growth and development in the area by increasing network capacity and ensuring the water infrastructure can meet demand.
Welcoming the project, Dave Murphy, Portfolio Manager with Uisce Éireann, said the works will deliver long-term benefits for the community: “We are committed to providing customers in Carlow with a water supply they can rely on. Every section of watermain we replace helps to reduce leakage, improve water quality and strengthen the network for homes and businesses.
“These upgrades will make a real difference day-to-day, helping to build a more resilient water supply for the community into the future.”
The works will take place along Blackbog Road, the R448 which serves as a main access route to South East Technological University and Green Road.
The works will commence in June. The project is being delivered by Shareridge Ltd on behalf of Uisce Éireann with completion expected this, Autumn.

This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann works every day to reduce leaks. With more than 65,000 km of underground pipes nationally - enough to circle the earth one and a half times - fixing leaks can be complicated. Many are hidden, but we are making progress: national leakage is now at its lowest ever, reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36%.
