Stronger, more reliable water supply delivered for Rathvilly

Delivering improved drinking water quality and a more dependable supply for local homes and businesses

Homes and businesses on Phelan Street in Rathvilly are now benefiting from a stronger, more reliable water supply following the completion of essential watermain upgrade works by Uisce Éireann.

Delivered as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme, the works involved the decommissioning of ageing watermains and the installation of 230 metres of new modern pipes along Phelan Street. These upgrades reduce leakage, improve drinking water quality and strengthen the local water network.

In older properties, water connections were often made of iron or lead and, due to their age and deteriorating condition, had become a significant source of leakage and reduced service levels. Many of these connections were shared between neighbouring properties, making leaks difficult to detect and repair, often resulting in low water pressure for groups of homes when issues arose.

The upgraded network now provides a more dependable water supply for residents, improving water quality at the tap, reducing the risk of bursts and interruptions, and ensuring treated drinking water is protected and used where it is needed most.

Welcoming the completion of the works, Dave Murphy, Portfolio Manager with Uisce Éireann, said the project delivers meaningful benefits for the Rathvilly community:
“Families and businesses in Rathvilly are now benefiting from a stronger and more reliable water supply and improved water quality, making a real difference in everyday life, whether at home, at work or across the wider community.

By replacing ageing watermains and service connections, we are reducing leakage and protecting our treated water resources, while improving water pressure and ensuring a more consistent service for customers.

We know that works like these can be challenging, and we would like to thank the community for their patience and support throughout. This investment delivers a dependable water service that people in Rathvilly can rely on now and into the future.”

This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann is working every day to reduce leakage across the country. With over 65,000 km of water pipes underground in Ireland—enough to circle the earth one and a half times—finding and fixing leaks can be complex, particularly when they are not visible. However, progress continues to be made, with national leakage reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36%.
