Overnight restrictions in Castlecomer area necessary to protect daytime supply

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section

Uisce Éireann wishes to advise customers in the Castlecomer area that intermittent overnight water supply restrictions are required to conserve water and maintain daytime supply.

Restrictions will be in place tonight from 9pm until 7am until further notice. Homes and businesses are asked to be mindful of their water usage to allow supply to catch up with demand and enable reservoir levels to recover.

Customers in the following areas may experience interruptions to supply, discolouration, or reduced pressure during these times: Clogh, Ardra, Massford, Moneenroe, Coolbawn, Castlecomer and surrounding areas.

We understand the impact supply disruptions have on homes and businesses, and every effort is being made to minimise the duration of these restrictions.

Customers should allow 3–4 hours after the estimated restoration time for supply to fully return.

Speaking about the restrictions, Uisce Éireann’s Shane Aylward said: “Due to a significant reduction in available raw water at the treatment plant, it is difficult to maintain reservoir levels. These levels are monitored daily, and the current restrictions are necessary to maintain a consistent daytime supply. We understand the inconvenience and thank the community for their patience.”

Uisce Éireann is advancing plans to address water supply challenges in Castlecomer through a proposed connection to the Kilkenny City (Troyswood) Water Resource Zone, providing a secure and sustainable long-term supply. The project is moving into its next phase, including engagement with affected landowners to commence this month followed by ground investigations, detailed design, and applications for statutory approvals towards the end of 2026. Subject to approvals, it will then progress to tender and construction. This investment is focused on delivering a safe, reliable, and resilient supply that meets current demand, supports future growth and reduces the risk of outages. We will continue to keep the community informed as the project progresses.

Customers can find useful water saving tips on our Conservation page, including an easy-to-use conservation calculator to track how much water they are saving and identify ways to conserve more.
