James Larkin Road reopens as next phase of major water project gets underway

Communities across north Dublin set to enjoy improved drinking water supply as new water pipeline project progresses

Homes and businesses across north Dublin are set to benefit from a stronger and more reliable water supply as Uisce Éireann reaches another major milestone in its North City Arterial Main project, with James Larkin Road now reopened to traffic.

This project will significantly reduce the risk of interruption to supply to 160,000 properties across the Dublin region. This €25 million investment involves the installation of 5.5km of new high pressure trunk water main designed to significantly reinforce the water supply network in north Dublin city. By integrating with the existing arterial water network, the new main will establish a stronger, more robust, and more direct path from reservoir to tap.

The reopening of the James Larkin Road marks an important milestone in the delivery of the project, with over 1.9km of new pipeline installed so far.

This upgrade is part of an ongoing investment in water services in the Greater Dublin Area. Much of the existing water network was originally developed to serve around 500,000 people; today it supports approximately 2 million. Investment of this scale is essential to futureproof the system, address pressure on ageing infrastructure, and ensure a reliable supply for a growing population.

Uisce Éireann’s Jessica Dale said: "We're pleased to be reaching this milestone and reopening the James Larkin Road as works continue to progress across the project. This investment will help strengthen north Dublin's water network and provide a more secure and reliable drinking water supply for local homes and businesses for many years to come.

"We understand these works can be disruptive, and we'd like to thank the local community for their patience and cooperation to date. Every section completed brings us another step closer to delivering the long-term benefits this critical infrastructure project will provide."

While the James Larkin Road has reopened, works are continuing on Thornville Road and Greendale Road. These works are being scheduled during the summer holidays to reduce impacts on local families and school communities, particularly in the Greendale and Thornville Road areas. Some short-duration weekend works will also take place on Kilbarrack Road to facilitate pipe installation. Works have also progressed to the junction of James Larkin Road, Howth Road and Greendale Road. Construction will then progress north along Howth Road and Dublin Road towards Bayside Boulevard over the coming months.

There will be no further lane closures for the remainder of the project. Traffic management will operate under a stop/go system as works progress through the remaining phases. Access for residents, businesses and emergency services will be maintained throughout. More information is available on the NCAM project project.

This project is part of Water for Growth, a major investment programme for the Eastern Region. With an initial investment of over €500 million, it brings together 30 coordinated projects to be delivered over the next 10 years, focused on strengthening the existing water supply network and supporting the region’s continued growth.
