Investment in Enniscorthy continues to provide a more reliable water supply and support growth

At Uisce Éireann, we’re committed to providing a reliable water supply for everyone in the community. To help make that happen, we’re getting underway with further upgrade works to replace old and damaged water mains in the town.  

Our crews will install 1.6 kms of new, modern pipes to strengthen the local network, reduce disruption for homes and businesses, and support growth and development in the local community. The work will increase the capacity of the existing water network, improve performance, and provide a more resilient water supply for a growing population.

With a €16 million investment recently completed to reimage the water treatment plant on Vinegar Hill the focus now turns to realising the full potential at the plant, by building a brand-new larger pipe to carry that water into the town, unlocking much needed growth and development within the community.  

Additional sections of water mains were prioritised as part of this project for replacement in the town due to their deteriorating condition, which has at times resulted in low pressure and supply interruptions to homes and business.  

When completed these critical works combined will significantly reduce leakage and provide local residents with a sustainable and more reliable water supply for generations to come.  
Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne TD welcomed the works, saying:  

“This water main upgrade for Enniscorthy is part of sustained investment to modernise the towns water infrastructure and will deliver positive outcome for the local community. The upgrade will ensure a robust and reliable water supply for the area, which local homes and businesses can rely on. 

“It will also help to support local development and growth, by putting in place the right infrastructure for Enniscorthy as a place to live and work.  

“I commend Uisce Éireann on the rollout of these upgrade works and the progress being made to provide a more reliable water supply and reduce leakage in Wexford and right around the country.”

Welcoming the project, Dave Murphy of Uisce Éireann said that these upgrades will help stop leakage, give the community in Enniscorthy greater confidence in their water supply, and enable growth and development into the future.  

“Every pipe we replace is guided by one clear goal: providing a water supply people can count on. These improvements make a difference every single day, in every tap, home and throughout the community. By focusing on delivering a more reliable supply, we’re helping to build a stronger, more resilient water service for the people of Enniscorthy, now and for generations to come.”  

This programme of works, which will begin this week, will take place across three separate sections, starting from Vinegar Hill Reservoir to Old Church Road, from Vinegar Hill Water Treatment Plant to Father Murphy Park (Vinegar Hill Lane junction) and from Father Murphy Park (via Slaney View Park) to the Shannon – Templeshannon crossroads.  

Our crews will work hard to keep the project moving during the school holidays, prioritising works around local schools during the summer break, doing everything they can to reduce any disruption on the local community.

The project is being delivered by Shareridge, on behalf of Uisce Éireann with completion expected by the Winter of 2026.
