Improving Service and Building Resilience as Water Mains Replacement Begins in Freemount

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section

As part of our continued commitment to strengthening the local network in Freemount, Uisce Éireann is progressing with the replacement of 420m of ageing watermains. These pipes have been prone to bursts and supply interruptions, and their replacement marks an important step forward in delivering long term reliability for the local community.

Uisce Éireann acknowledges how difficult recent water supply interruptions have been for the community. We know that outages and low pressure disrupt daily routines, and we want to sincerely thank households and businesses for their patience and understanding during this challenging period.

Commenting on the project, Jack Cronin, Programme Manager, Uisce Éireann said: “The works in Freemount form an important part of our national drive to reduce leakage and build a stronger, more resilient water network. By upgrading ageing infrastructure, we are helping to provide communities with a dependable water service that supports them every day. We know how important a reliable supply is, and we fully appreciate the impact recent outages have had on local households and businesses. This upgrade is being delivered with the community’s needs at its core — helping to reduce future disruptions, improve service, and strengthen the network for many years to come.”

Works will take place along Noonan Park and Allow Place, including the installation of new service connections from the public water main to property boundaries. The project is due to begin next week and finish in March 2026. Once complete, customers can expect a more reliable supply with fewer disruptions. Ward and Burke Construction Ltd will carry out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

To facilitate the safe delivery of the project traffic management will be in place at this time. Local and emergency traffic will always be maintained. This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann is working to reduce leaks every day. Fixing leaks can be complicated. We have over 65,000 km of water pipes underground in Ireland – enough to circle the earth one and a half times. Most leaks aren’t visible, resulting in precious water being lost but we are making progress. Leakage levels are now at their lowest ever with water loss reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% nationally.  To keep your water running reliably, some short-term planned water shut offs may be required to support the works. Customers will receive at least 48 hours’ notice in advance. Our crews will work with care to complete the works as quickly as possible and restore normal service.

Customers can phone Uisce Éireann on 1800 278 278 if they have any questions about the project or visit the Water Supply Updates section of the Uisce Éireann website for regular updates.
