Driving down leakage and improving reliability of local water supply in Oola

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section

At Uisce Éireann, we’re committed to providing a reliable water supply for everyone in the community. To help make that happen, we’re getting underway with works to replace old and damaged water mains in Oola, Co Limerick.

Along the R507, and N24, our crews will be installing 4.8km of new modern pipes that will strengthen the local network and reduce disruption to homes and businesses.

As the local community know, these old watermains are prone to frequent bursts, causing inconvenience for homes and businesses, and complex repair works for our operations team.

Welcoming the works, Brian McCarthy, Programme Manager in Uisce Éireann explained that by putting these new pipes in the ground, we’re improving service and giving the community in Oola more confidence in their water supply.

“We know this upgrade will come as welcome news to the community in Oola, who have been facing water supply challenges over recent years. Our crews are looking forward to getting started, and providing a water supply people can count on. Its impact is felt every day – in every tap, home and community. By focusing on delivering that reliable supply, we continue to strengthen water service resilience for the people of Oola into the future. I would like to thank the community in advance for their patience and support while we deliver these essential works.”

The works, which begins next week also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’ water supply.

The project is being delivered by Ward and Burke Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann with completion expected by September 2026.

Customers can phone Uisce Éireann on 1800 278 278 if they have any questions about the project or visit the Water Supply Updates section of the Uisce Éireann website for regular updates.

We have measures in place to keep disruption to an absolute minimum but to keep our crews and the public safe a traffic management system will be in place during the works, but locals can be assured that local and emergency traffic will be facilitated at all times.

This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann works every day to reduce leaks. With more than 65,000 km of underground pipes nationally- enough to circle the earth one and a half times - fixing leaks can be complicated. Many are hidden, but we are making progress: national leakage is now at its lowest ever, reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36%.
