Uisce Éireann is set to commence a project to upgrade the wastewater network in Maryborough Ridge, strengthening essential infrastructure to support future social and economic development in the town, including the delivery of essential new homes on the city’s southside.
This upgrade will increase wastewater treatment capacity, delivering more reliable, sustainable and high quality services for the community, while supporting local housing and enabling Douglas to continue to grow and thrive.
The works involve the installation and upgrade of over 600 metres of sewer mains to support future growth and development in the Douglas area.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin said: “Wastewater networks are vital infrastructure - key to unlocking new housing potential and supporting economic growth.”
“This upgrade is very welcome news for the residents and businesses of Douglas. It is a clear example of government’s commitment to investing in water infrastructure across the country.”
Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne, TD, welcomed the commencement of this vital work in the Cork City suburb.
“This project is positive news for the community of Douglas. Public water and wastewater services are essential to facilitating housing delivery as reflected in our new Housing Action Plan, Delivering Homes, Building Communities. The commencement of this project provides critical capacity to enable new homes in Douglas and serve the needs of the existing community.”
Uisce Eireann Programme Manager, Derek Deignan is pleased to see works getting underway. “We are delighted to be delivering this project for the community and to be facilitating social and economic growth in Douglas. These works will also see improved network performance and a reduced risk of sewer flooding in the area”.
Ward and Burke Construction Ltd. is carrying out these works on behalf of Uisce Éireann, and works are due to be completed in June 2026.
We have measures in place to keep disruption to an absolute minimum but to protect the public and our crews, a temporary traffic management system will be in place during the works. Local and emergency traffic will always be maintained.
