Update 26 May 8:30am - Normal supply continues to return to all areas as water refills a large area of Dublin’s water network

Uisce Éireann and Dublin City Council (DCC) have successfully completed emergency repairs following a major burst to a high pressure watermain serving Dublin City.

Following reports of outages yesterday morning, expert DCC water services crews were immediately dispatched to find and fix the burst and every effort was made to reduce the impact on homes and businesses and restore water supply as quickly as possible.

Repairs were complex due to the location of the pipe and the presence of other underground services, however, to minimise disruption as much as possible crews worked throughout the night to progress repairs which were completed at approximately 2am this morning.

Following the repairs, it takes several hours for normal water supply to return to all customers due to the size of Dublin’s network, especially for those on higher ground or at the end of the impacted network.

Supporting the needs of our vulnerable customers and essential services during unplanned outages was a key priority for Uisce Éireann and parts of the network were reconfigured where possible to lessen the impact. DCC crews spent the day yesterday turning valves to ensure water continued to flow to as many as possible from alternative areas of the network. To further support customers, Uisce Éireann arranged alternative water supplies in key locations across Dublin.

Joe O’Reilly, Uisce Éireann, commented: “We understand how disruptive unplanned outages are for local communities and would like to thank all impacted customers across Dublin for their patience during while crews worked on repairs.

Joe added: “I would like to thank the specialist water services crews in Dublin City Council for their dedication and expertise and for working throughout the night to limit the impact on customers and successfully complete the repairs. In addition, thanks to the residents in the area for their patience and understanding as we worked through the night on the repairs.”

Following this type of work, occasionally issues such as cloudy water (air bubbles), discolouration or internal airlocks may arise. The Uisce Éireann customer care helpline is also open 24/7 on 1800 278 278 and customers can also contact us on Twitter @IWCare with any queries. Following reports of outages, expert DCC water services crews were immediately dispatched to find and fix the burst and every effort is being made to reduce the impact on homes and businesses and restore water supply as quickly as possible. Repairs are complex due to the location of the pipe and the presence of other underground services, however, crews continue to make good progress and will continue throughout the night to progress repairs until normal water supply is restored for all customers.

We can’t yet confirm a time for full return of service to all customers as an assessment of the burst and resulting damage to the pipe will need to be undertaken before a definitive time can be confirmed. Following repairs, it may take several hours for normal water supply to return to all customers due to the size of the network, especially for those on higher ground or at the end of the network. A further update will be provided tomorrow morning.
