Crews progressing critical water infrastructure upgrade works in Athlone

Planned interruption to the water supply to facilitate connections

Uisce Éireann is making steady progress on a major upgrade to strengthen Athlone’s water supply by upgrading trunk water main that connects Athlone Town Water Treatment Plant to the Annagh Reservoir.

This essential work will provide a safer and more reliable water supply for homes and businesses in Athlone.

To facilitate connections works of the new mains there will be a planned night time outages which may impact customers in Athlone and the surrounding areas this week.

Customers in Athlone Town, Killion Hill, Fardrum, Bonnavalley, Dublin Road, Garrycastle & Ardnaglug and the surrounding areas may experience a disruption to their supply from 10pm Wednesday 6 May to 4am on Thursday 7 May 2026.

Uisce Éireann’s Johnny Naughton said, “We understand the inconvenience caused by an interruption to supply. Every effort will be made to limit the impact of these essential works, and we would like to thank the community in advance for their patience and co-operation.

“Following the completion of the works, it can take two to three hours for normal water supply to return to customers as water refills the network, particularly for those properties on higher ground or at the end of the network.”
