Crews are working to restore normal water supply in impacted areas across Cork City as cold snap continues
Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section
With below freezing temperatures in recent days and the cold snap expected to continue over the coming days, Uisce Éireann crews are working across the city to maintain and restore water supplies, where bursts have occurred.
During these weather conditions, frozen pipes and ground movements during thaw can temporarily interrupt the flow of water through pipes and cause pipes to burst. As a result of this, some customer in Cork City may currently be experiencing a loss of pressure or a disruption to their water supply. Areas impacted include Bishopstown, Magazine Road and Douglas Road.
To carry out the essential repair works to the burst water main on Douglas Road, an overnight water outage is necessary this evening, given the complexities of the repair works. The works will take place from 10pm Monday, 05 January to 3am on Tuesday, 06 January and may result in supply disruptions in the wider Douglas area. Traffic management will also be in place over the course of these works.
Uisce Éireann is also continuing repair works to restore water supply to approximately 40 homes and businesses in Bishopstown, following a recent burst watermain in the area. The burst is impacting customers in Uam Var Grove and the surrounding areas.
Alternative water supplies are now available in the form of bulk tankers, which can be accessed in Uam Var Grove. Customers are reminded to use their own containers when taking water from tankers and to boil water before consumption as a precautionary measure.
Operations Manager, James Goulding, would like to assure customers that crews are working to ensure that normal water supply is restored across the city, “We know from previous winters that freezing conditions can cause disruption for homes and businesses. Our crews are ready to respond and are on the ground investigating bursts and carrying out essential repair works.”
"We recommend that people don't run taps continually as this is not an effective way of preventing frozen pipes and can cause other problems such as frozen drains. It also puts further pressure on water supplies that may already be challenged by the freezing conditions.”
“It also a good idea to familiarise yourself with your own internal water system and particularly how to turn off your supply at the stopcock so that you can protect your property.”
