Cloonfad water outage: Supply returning to customers following completion of repairs

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section

Water supply is returning to customers in Cloonfad after crews successfully repaired a burst on a water main in the village. The network is now refilling and normal water supply will return gradually over the coming hours.

The burst disrupted supply for homes and businesses in parts of Cloonfad this morning, but with repairs now complete, our crews are continuing to monitor the network as water pressure recovers.

Providing an update, Ger Greally of Uisce Éireann said: “We know how frustrating it has been for customers to experience a number of water supply disruptions in recent weeks, and we sincerely regret the impact these outages have had on homes, businesses, and the wider community. We want to assure customers that we are doing everything we can to minimise further disruption, both through our response to incidents as they arise and through the ongoing water mains replacement works currently underway in the area.

“We would like to thank the people of Cloonfad for their continued patience and understanding while our crews carried out these repairs. The burst has now been repaired and water supply is returning to customers as the network continues to refill. While many customers will see supplies return quickly, it can take a number of hours for water pressure to fully recover across the network, particularly for those on higher ground or at the end of the network.”

Previous Updates

Work is continuing to restore normal water supply to customers in Cloonfad following a burst water main in the village this morning. Crews are on site carrying out repairs and every effort is being made to restore supply as quickly and safely as possible.

Ger Greally, Uisce Éireann’s Water Treatment Operations Manager for Co Roscommon, said: "We know our customers have faced a difficult week with supply issues, and we sincerely regret the additional disruption caused by this burst. Our immediate priority is restoring water supply to affected homes and businesses as soon as possible."

Repairs are expected to be completed this afternoon and water supplies will return gradually over the following hours as the network refills. Customers in higher-lying areas or at the ends of the network may experience a longer wait while the system fully recharges.

While crews work to repair the burst and restore supply to customers today, Uisce Éireann continues to progress a crucial 5km water mains replacement project in Cloonfad aimed at addressing the underlying causes of the recurring bursts and supply disruptions in the area. Approximately 40% of the project has now been completed, with more than 2km of old and damaged water mains already replaced. These works will help reduce the risk of future outages and deliver a more reliable water supply for the community.

Supporting customers, particularly those who may be more vulnerable during service interruptions, remains a priority. Efforts are continuing to restore normal water supply to customers in parts of Cloonfad following a significant burst which severely disrupted supplies to homes, farms and businesses across the area.

Since the burst was repaired crews have been working continuously to restore stable supplies across the network. However, exceptionally high demand on the system is making it difficult to release airlocks that have formed within the network, resulting in ongoing supply issues for some customers.

To help restore supply, crews are continually adjusting network pressures across the supply zone in an effort to move water through the network and return water to affected customers. While these measures are assisting customers in many locations, it is proving particularly challenging to restore consistent supply to customers in higher-lying areas.

Alternative water supplies remain available for customers impacted by the disruption, with bottled water and a water tanker in place close to the Westview Estate in Cloonfad.

Uisce Éireann's Ger Greally acknowledged the ongoing difficulties being experienced by customers and assured the community that every effort is being made to restore normal supply.

"Our teams have been working tirelessly since this incident occurred, and we understand the and inconvenience being experienced by customers. While the burst has been repaired, the combination of exceptionally high demand and a number of airlocks on the network is continuing to create challenges in some parts of the supply area. We are adjusting pressures across the network and doing everything possible to move water through the system and restore supplies to all affected customers. Unfortunately, customers in higher-lying areas are proving the most difficult to reach, but crews remain on the ground and will continue working until supplies are fully restored.

"We are also working to bring in an additional water tanker to supplement supplies and help resolve the issue as quickly as possible. We know this has been a difficult time for affected customers and we would ask them to bear with us while crews continue their efforts to restore a full and consistent supply to all homes, farms and businesses."

Alternative water supplies have been put in place for customers affected by the ongoing supply disruption in the Cloonfad and Lowberry area this afternoon.

Bottled water is available close to the Westview Estate in Cloonfad for customers who require access to water while restoration works continue.

The disruption follows the repair of an unplanned burst yesterday and the tie-in of a short section of the new water main currently being installed between Cloonfad and Lowberry Cross. While progress has been made, some airlocks have developed on the network, and crews are working to build pressure across the system to restore supply to all affected customers as quickly as possible.

We regret the inconvenience caused and thank customers for their patience and understanding while crews work to resolve the issue.

We expect a full return of water supply to affected customers this evening. Crews remain on site and will continue working until supply has been fully restored.
