Green-Schools is operated by An Taisce and is Ireland’s leading environmental management and award programme, working with primary and secondary schools across the country.
Through our partnership with Green-Schools we sponsor the Water Theme, which engages with thousands of schools throughout the country, to help them increase awareness of water conservation in their schools and local communities. Water is the third theme of the Green-Schools programme. The Water theme looks at developing awareness around water conservation and how to effectively manage this important resource in our schools and at home.
Green-Schools is Ireland’s largest and most successful environmental education programme operating in over 93% of primary and secondary schools in the country.
Green-Schools embraces long-term whole-school school action for the environment across themes including water, energy and waste. Green-Schools offers a way for schools to take environmental topics from the curriculum and include them in the every day running of the school. It aims to make environmental accountability a key part of school, including students, teachers, non-teaching staff, and parents, as well as the Local Authority, the media, and local businesses, extending learning beyond the classroom and developing a commitment to the environment, both at home and in the wider community.
The aim of the Water theme is for schools to increase awareness of water conservation and efficiency and for students to understand its impact on our lives. This is achieved through the pupil-centred nature of the programme.
Schools are encouraged to improve water efficiency by adopting new cost reduction measures through the Green-Schools programme framework. During the last academic year schools in Ireland saved 582 litres of water per person per year, enough water to make 660 million cups of tea. Schools awarded the Green Flag for the Water theme show that on average they decreased the amount of water consumed by a third. This is achieved through actions including increasing user awareness, installation of water displacement devices, rainwater collection, and installing water saving devices. Since it began, the Water Theme has reached over 445,000 students and 35,000 teachers.
Our sponsorship involves the sole sponsorship of the Water theme which will engage directly with over 1,000 schools in each academic year.
We are committed to supporting the education and engagement of primary and secondary school students in water conservation and efficiency throughout Ireland. We are delighted to be working with schools throughout the country to ensure we are all more aware and mindful of our water use, in school, at home and in our local communities.
We would like to thank the Green-Schools programme and all participating schools for their commitment to water conservation and protection.
