Turners Cross: Lead Removal Project
Leakage Reduction Programme
Uisce Éireann, in partnership with Cork City Council, replaced lead service connections in Turners Cross, Cork City to ensure a safer and more secure water supply to customers.
Uisce Éireann invested over €500 million between 2017–2021 to reduce leakage and replace old pipes on the public water network.
Benefits
- Removal of Lead Pipework – These works removed approximately 80 lead service connections, resulting in improved water quality.
- A Reliable Water Supply – Replacement of water mains and service connections reduced the instances of bursts and water outages and ensured a reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area.
- Reduced Leaks – Replacement of water mains and service connections eliminated existing leaks and reduced the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.
- Improved Operation and Maintenance – These works delivered cost savings by providing improved water network operation that required less maintenance in the future.
Steps
- This project involved removing approximately 80 lead service connections from the public water network on the following streets in Turners Cross: St. Patricks Road (West), Friars Road (Middle), Father Matthew Road (Middle and West), Mount Pleasant Road.
- Works commenced in September 2020.
- These works were carried out as part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme.
- The works involved laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers' property boundaries and connecting it to the customers' water supply. These lead service connections were replaced with modern polyethylene (HDPE) plastic pipes to ensure a safer, more reliable supply of water to customers in the area.
- The works were carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Coffey Northumbrian LTD. and were completed in December 2020.
Will customers be affected by the works?
Areas of work were limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers. Traffic management was in place during this time. There were local diversions in place during the works. Local and emergency traffic were maintained at all times.
The works involved some short-term water shut offs, and the project team ensured that customers were given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water shut offs.
We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews made every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works caused.
