Tullamore Wastewater Network Upgrade
Uisce Éireann is commencing Site Investigation Works to inform the required upgrades to the Wastewater Network in Tullamore, Co. Offaly.
Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Offaly County Council and Waterways Ireland, are commencing the Detailed Design stage of the proposed upgrade works required for the wastewater network in Tullamore Town, Co. Offaly. Site survey works are required to inform the design of the proposed project.
The current wastewater infrastructure in the town is inadequate and upgrades are required to ensure wastewater discharges meet environmental compliance regulations. The proposed project is part of Uisce Éireann's Growth and Development Programme, a national programme of targeted investment to increase the capacity of water and wastewater infrastructure to enable social and economic growth and development, including the delivery of essential housing.
As part of the Detailed Design Stage 2.88km of the foul network will be reviewed and a specimen design will be put forward that will facilitate future growth and development in the area and provide solutions to areas subject flooding.
Coffey Construction are carrying out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
What are the benefits of this project?
- The site investigation works will inform the design of the proposed Tullamore Wastewater Network upgrade.
- The Tullamore Wastewater Network upgrade will facilitate future growth in the town and reduce external property flooding.
What is involved as part of the site investigation works?
- Slit trenches, boreholes, sampling, in-situ and laboratory testing / work.
- CCTV survey of the proposed 2.88km network upgrade.
- Ground penetrating radar (GPR) and seismic refraction of the proposed 2.88km of the network upgrade.
- These works will take place at various locations across the town both north and south of the Grand Canal, including Convent View, Thornsbury Estate, Callery Street, Connolly Park, Convent Road, Patrick Street and Main Street.
- Temporary traffic management measures will be in place throughout the duration of the Site Investigation Works. These will be implemented in the form of Stop/Go systems and are designed to facilitate the safe and efficient delivery of the Site Investigation Works.
What are the next steps?
- Site Investigation Works are due to commence towards the end of August 2025.
- The Site Investigation Works are scheduled to take nine weeks to complete.
- No road closures are envisaged as part of this project.
- Once the design phase is complete, Uisce Éireann will progress the necessary statutory, regulatory, and budgetary approvals required to deliver the new infrastructure.
