Newtowncashel Water Mains Replacement
Uisce Éireann is carrying out leakage reduction works in Newtowncashel, Co. Longford to provide a more reliable water supply and reduce high levels of leakage.
The works involve the replacement of almost 2km of old and damaged pipeline that serves as a rising water main and distribution main connecting Newtowncashel Water Treatment Plant (WTP) to Newtowncashel reservoir with new modern pipes. The programme of works will commence in late April and is estimated to last until the end of June. These works are being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.
The section of works will run along the L1150 from the Church of the Blessed Virgin through Newtowncashel village to the junction with the L1152 and will include any associated assets required along the route.
The works will be carried out by Shareridge Ltd., on behalf of Uisce Éireann and are expected to be completed by the end of June 2026.

What are the benefits of the works?
The benefits of the leakage reduction works include:
- A Reliable Water Supply – Replacement of water mains and service connections will reduce the instances of bursts and water outages and will ensure a reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area.
- Reduced Leaks – Replacement of water mains and service connections will eliminate existing leaks, improve water pressure and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.
- Improved Operation and Maintenance – These works will deliver cost savings by providing improved water network operation that will require less maintenance in the future.
Will customers be affected by the works?
Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers. Traffic management will be in place at this time, in the form of a stop / go system and temporary traffic lights. However, local and emergency traffic will always be maintained.
We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause.
