Milford Water Treatment Plant Upgrade
Uisce Éireann has commenced a major upgrade of the Milford Water Treatment Plant in Co. Donegal.
Uisce Éireann is progressing with works to upgrade the Milford Water Treatment Plant in Co. Donegal. The Milford Public Water Scheme (PWS) supplies water to Milford and surrounding areas, serving approximately up to 14,000 people. This investment will benefit the people of Milford by improving the drinking water quality, while also complying with the current Drinking Water Regulations.
Works will be delivered on behalf of Uisce Éireann by EPS Ltd.
Why are we upgrading the water treatment plant?
The Milford Regional Water Supply is included on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Remedial Action List (RAL), which identifies water supplies that need improvement.
All public water supplies need to be disinfected to make sure the water is safe to drink. Chlorine is used to disinfect drinking water. An effect of this can be chemical compounds called trihalomethanes (THMs) can form over time. This happens when chlorine reacts with natural organic matter in the water. Surface water, like Lough Colm, which is the source of this water supply, has a large amount of organic matter in it. Because of this, THMs can form in supply.
This project being delivered will upgrade the existing processes at the water treatment plant to prevent the formation of THMs. Once completed, the works will improve drinking water quality, reliability, and resilience of the water supply for the community.
What is proposed as part of this project?
This project will involve the following works:
- Installation of new secondary filtration system;
- Upgrade to wash water settlement tanks;
- Upgrade to control and monitoring systems to improve the reliability and resilience of the plant;
- All other associated Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control, Automation and ancillary works.
What are the benefits of this project?
- Improve the drinking water quality;
- Ensure compliance with current drinking water quality regulations;
- Remove the water supply from the EPA’s Remedial Action List.
