Magazine Road Water Mains Replacement
Uisce Éireann is carrying out leakage reduction works along Magazine Road, Cork City to provide a more reliable water supply and reduce high levels of leakage.
The works involve the replacement of 750 metres of old and damaged cast iron water mains with new modern pipes. The programme to replace the water mains along Magazine Road will commence at in mid-April 2026. These works are being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.
The section of works will take place along St. Clare’s Avenue, Highfield West, and Magazine Road.
The works will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’ water supply.
The works will be carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Ward and Burke Ltd and are expected to be completed in July 2026.

What are the benefits of the works?
The benefits of the leakage reduction works include:
- A Reliable Water Supply – Replacement of water mains and service connections will reduce the instances of bursts and water outages and will ensure a reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area.
- Reduced Leaks – Replacement of water mains and service connections will eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.
- Improved Water Quality – Removing existing old cast iron and lead from the public water network and replacing them with new pipes.
- Improved Operation and Maintenance – These works will deliver cost savings by providing improved water network operation that will require less maintenance in the future.
Will customers be affected by the works?
Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers. Traffic management will be in place at this time, in the form of road closures. However, local and emergency traffic will always be maintained.
Road closures will be in place along, St. Clares Avenue and Highfield West from 20 April – 01 June, these road closures will be intermittent over the course of this six week period as the crews progress through works. A road closure will be in place along Magazine Road from 02 June – 14 July.
Local and emergency traffic will always be maintained for the duration of these road closures.
The works may involve some short-term water interruptions, and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water interruptions.
