Lough Mask Water Supply Scheme
Uisce Éireann will soon commence upgrade works as part of a €29.3 million investment to the Lough Mask (Tourmakeady) Water Treatment Plant.
Uisce Éireann will soon commence works to upgrade the Lough Mask (Tourmakeady) Water Treatment Plant (WTP). Uisce Éireann’s upgrade works will enable growth and improve the security of water supply and water quality across the North West. The WTP currently supplies approximately 42,700 people and this upgrade will provide capacity for the equivalent of an additional 20,000 houses. Veolia Water has been appointed to carry out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
Why is this project needed?
Lough Mask (Tourmakeady) WTP is the 6th largest WTP in Ireland in terms of production. It supplies potable water to the regionally important urban centres of Castlebar, parts of Westport, Ballinrobe, Claremorris, Ballindine, Knock, Ballyhaunis, Balla and numerous group water schemes. The existing WTP is now running at maximum capacity with limited headroom for growth in the water supply zone. This upgrade by Uisce Éireann is going to increase the capacity of the existing water treatment process and provide capacity for growth.
Once completed, the works will enable the treatment of an additional 10 million litres of drinking water per day, approximately equivalent to the usage of 20,000 additional houses.
What is involved in this project?
This project will upgrade the treatment processes at Lough Mask Water Treatment Plant while also increasing capacity at the plant.
This project involves the following works:
- Upgrading the clarifier process (complete).
- Improvement of coagulant mixing and control system;
- Additional water quality monitoring;
- Fully refurbishing the filtration system;
- Upgraded disinfection process;
- Upgraded sludge treatment process including equalisation, settlement, balancing and thickening tanks;
- Construction of buildings and kiosks associated with the new equipment;
- Improving the water treatment plant infrastructure, including chemical dosing equipment and the welfare and control building.
What are the benefits?
- Provide a safer and more reliable water supply for 42,700 customers.
- These works will ensure a safe, secure and reliable water supply in Mayo, Roscommon and North Galway.
- The project will also enable future growth and development in Mayo, Roscommon and North Galway. Additional capacity will be available for up to 20,000 houses.
- Ensures compliance with requirements set out in the European Union Drinking Water Directive and National Drinking Water Regulations.
What are the next steps?
Works will commence on site in Summer 2025, with works expected for completion in 2028.
