Longford Town Water Mains Replacement

Uisce Éireann National Leakage Reduction Programme

Uisce Éireann is replacing aged water mains in Longford Town, Co. Longford to provide a more reliable water supply, reduce high levels of leakage and improve water quality.

The works involve the replacement of over 575 metres of aged cast iron water mains with new modern pipes. The programme to replace the water mains in Longford Town will commence in late July. These works are being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.

The works will take place along St Joseph’s Road and along the Viewmount Road.

The works will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’ water supply.

The works will be carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Shareridge and are expected to be completed by early November 2026

The benefits of these leakage reduction works include:

  • Reliable Water Supply – Replacement of problematic water mains and service connections will reduce the instances of bursts and interruptions to the water supply reducing disruption for homes and businesses in the area.
  • Reduced Leaks – Replacement of problematic water mains and service connections will eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.
  • Improved Water Quality – Removing existing old cast iron and lead from the public water network and replacing them with new pipes will reduce the risk of contamination.
  • Improved Operation and Maintenance – These works will deliver efficiencies including cost savings by providing improved water network operation that will require less maintenance in the future.

Will customers be affected by the works?

As part of the final phase of the upgrade project works at the Longford Train Station car park will begin on Monday, 12 October 2026, and are estimated to take three weeks to complete. The completion of this water supply project will necessitate closing the car park to the public for the duration of works. We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and we would like to thank the local community in advance for their cooperation.

  • Access to the Longford Train Station disabled car parking spots will be maintained throughout the duration of the works.
  • Alternative car parking is available at Earl St car park and the Iarnród Éireann, Park Road car park. (Earl St car park Google Maps Coordinates 53°43'27.4"N 7°47'38.7"W and Park Road car park Google Maps Coordinates - 53°43'26.2"N 7°47'49.9"W)
