Lahinch and Ennistymon Wastewater Treatment Plant

Uisce Éireann is progressing plans to construct a new Wastewater Treatment Plant in Lahinch and Ennistymon.

Lahinch and Ennistymon Wastewater Treatment Plants have been providing treatment to both communities since the 1900’s. Uisce Eireann has identified that both plants are now outdated, overloaded, and unable to cope with the needs of the communities they serve. In Lahinch, flooding affects the plant, while in Ennistymon, the system overflows at the River Inagh. Upgrades to the wastewater treatment process are required to ensure continued environmental compliance, and to support the growth and development of Lahinch and Ennistymon into the future.

The continuation of appropriate wastewater treatment will be vital to protect both human health and the local environment.

Uisce Éireann engaged with the local community and stakeholders regarding the proposed project through a non-statutory consultation process.  This consultation has now closed. All feedback received in response to this consultation has been recorded and will be considered by the project team. A summary of feedback received during this consultation process will be included in the Environmental Impact Assessment Report which will be submitted with the planning application to An Coimisiún Pleanála.

Upon completion the project will:

• Improve water quality which benefits the environment, ecology, sporting and tourism activities.
• Enable future growth and development in the community and cater for an increase in population for both communities.
• Enhance amenity value by providing a cleaner environment and act as a platform for social and economic development.
• Ensure that wastewater will be treated in accordance with European Union Urban Wastewater Treatment Directives and Environmental Protection Agency wastewater discharge licensing.
