Gurranabraher Water Mains Replacement

Uisce Éireann has replaced aged water mains in Gurranabraher to provide a more reliable water supply, reduce high levels of leakage and improve water quality.

The works involved the replacement of 2.4 kilometres of aged cast iron water mains with new modern pipes. The programme to replace the water mains in Gurranabraher commenced in early February 2025. These works were carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.

The works took place in the following locations: Barrett’s Terrace, Gurranabraher Road, Friars Avenue, Boyce’s Street, St. Anthony’s Road, Glen Ryan Road, McSwiney’s Villas, St. Theresa’s Road, St. Anne’s Road, Presentation Avenue, St. Vincent’s Street, St. Brigid’s Road, Gurranabraher Avenue, St. Rita’s Avenue and St. Philomena’s Road.

The works also involved laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’ water supply.

The works were carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Ward and Burke Construction Ltd.

What are the benefits of the works?

The benefits of these leakage reduction works:

  • Reliable Water Supply – Replacement of aged water mains and service connections reduces the instances of bursts and interruptions to the water supply reducing disruption for homes and businesses in the area.
  • Reduced Leaks – Replacement of aged water mains and service connections eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.
  • Improved Water Quality – Removing existing old cast iron and lead from the public water network and replacing them with new pipes.
  • Improved Operation and Maintenance – These works delivered efficiencies including cost savings by improving the operation of the water network requiring less maintenance in the future.

Will customers be affected by the works?

Areas of work were limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers. Traffic management was in place during this time. To deliver the works safely and efficiently road closures were required.  The local community were notified in advance of any closures. Local and emergency traffic were always maintained.

The works involved some short-term interruptions to the water supply. The project team ensured that customers were given a minimum of 48 hours-notice prior to any planned interruption.

We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient. Works crews made every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause.
