Growth and Development Programme - Lough - Capwell to South Douglas Road

Uisce Éireann is upgrading the water infrastructure from Lough to Capwell towards South Douglas Road to improve water quality and support future growth and development in the wider Cork City area.

The works involve the replacement of approximately 4 kilometres of cast iron water mains with the installation of new modern pipes. These works are being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s Growth and Development Programme and are expected to commence in late June 2025.

Works for this project will commence at the Lough and work towards the South Douglas Road. The first phase of works will take place at Pearse Road, Curragh Road and South Douglas Road.

This project is being delivered to support existing and future developments within the community. It will improve the supply capacity of the existing water network in the area, improving performance and reducing demands on the current network.

The works will be carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Ward and Burke and are expected to be completed by Spring 2026.

What are the benefits of the works?

The benefits of these water network works include:

  • Supporting social and economic development – This project will facilitate social and economic growth, including planned residential development.
  • Improving the water network – This project will upgrade the water network, increasing the capacity to deliver reliable, sustainable high-quality water services.

  • Improved Water Quality – Removing existing old cast iron and lead from the public water network and replacing them with new pipes will reduce instances of discolouration and the risk of contamination.

  • Providing a more resilient water supply – This project will improve the resilience of the water network, increasing connectivity to enable re-routing of water supply as required.

Will customers be affected by the works?

Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise the impact on customers. To safely and efficiently deliver the project, traffic management will be in place in the form of a stop / go system along with a combination of localised road closures. Local and emergency traffic will always be maintained.

The works may involve some short-term water interruptions, and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water interruptions.

We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause.
