Grangemockler Constructed Wetland Wastewater Treatment Plant
Sustainable and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment system in Grangemockler, Co. Tipperary.
Uisce Éireann has been granted full planning for the construction of a Constructed Wetland (CW) type Wastewater Treatment Plant (WwTP) at Grangemockler, Co. Tipperary. The Grangemockler CW is part of the National Certificate of Authorisation Programme (NCAP) undertaken by Uisce Éireann. This programme entails upgrading wastewater treatment plants across Ireland, to meet Uisce Éireann water quality objectives. A strategic assessment identified where an CW process would appear to be a feasible option to achieve the water quality objectives. Grangemockler has been identified as a site suitable for an CW approach.
Stantec and Ward & Burke Construction Ltd. are collaboratively carrying out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
The construction of this CW will result in biodiversity creation, a reduction in energy consumption and carbon emissions as well as reduced operational and maintenance costs. When complete, these upgrades will provide sufficient wastewater treatment to meet environmental and growth requirements for Grangemockler village.
What is involved as part of this project?
The site identified for the new CW WwTP is located to the east of Grangemockler on the eastern bank of the Currasilla Upper stream and within the lower River Suir SAC, while the site identified for the new pumping station is located on the western bank of the Currasilla Upper stream. The project will also facilitate the decommissioning of three existing wastewater treatment plants (WwTP) including two existing outfalls to the Lingaun River which currently serve the village. A new pedestrian bridge over the Currasilla stream will connect both sites.
What is involved in this project?
Project works will involve:
- The construction of a new CW WwTP to the east of Grangemockler.
- A new pumping station.
- The decommissioning of three existing WwTPs.
- A new pedestrian bridge over the Currasilla stream
What are the benefits of this project?
- The proposed CW WwTP is a nature-based solution that will significantly reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions when compared with the conventional wastewater treatment process.
- The constructed wetland will serve as a carbon sink, helping to offset emissions from other sources.
- The proposed CW solution incorporates vegetated ponds planted with native species suitable for the local environment. Vegetation within each of these CW ponds will enhance the biodiversity of the existing landscape.
- There will be minimal visual impact created by the limited above ground infrastructure.
What are the next steps?
- Planning has been granted by Tipperary County Council and confirmed by An Coimisiún Pleanála for the construction of the CW WwTP at Grangemockler.
- Construction is expected to commence in Autumn 2026.
