Dundrum Water Network upgrade
Uisce Éireann is delivering a new water network between Holycross and Gaile, Co. Tipperary to provide a more reliable water supply.
Uisce Éireann is commencing works to install a new water main between Holycross and Gaile, to provide a more secure and reliable water supply and to cater for future growth and development in the Boherlahan and Dundrum areas.
Currently the Stooke Water Treatment Plant supplies the Killough Reservoir which primarily serves the Dundrum area. This project will see the construction of 6.9km of water main, which will connect the water supply coming from the Thurles Water Treatment Plant at a location on the network at Holycross to an existing pumping station at Gaile to feed the Killough Reservoir.
The existing drinking water infrastructure serving the Boherlahan and Dundrum areas is at times not sufficient to meet demand and can be prone to restrictions that can impact the local communities. This project will provide a more secure supply of water to local homes and businesses. We call this ‘Rationalisation’. Rationalisation of a water supply means we need to build an extension to the underground water network to connect an area to another water supply.
Mallwood Ltd is delivering the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
Old vs. new pipes
What are the benefits of this project?
- Increase the security and reliability of the drinking water supply to customers.
- Support social and economic development within local communities.
- Reduce the risk of supply interruptions in the future.
Will the community be impacted by the works?
- Areas of work will be limited to short sections of road to minimise the impact on the community.
- During construction traffic management measures will be required, which may consist of short-term road closures and single lane Stop & Go traffic management.
- A phased road closure is required along the L4162 Galbertstown road from its junction with the R659 Thurles to Holycross Road, to the junction with the L1309 at Regaile.
- The L1309 road will be closed from late November to 19 December 2025 with detour signage in place. This road will reopen temporarily but will close again after the Christmas period to complete the remaining works in the new year.
