Uisce Éireann working to ensure Passage West remains open for business during vital works to clean up Cork Lower Harbour

We are working to help end the discharge of untreated sewage into Cork Lower Harbour.

Uisce Éireann, in partnership with Cork County Council, is working to end the decades-long practice of discharging untreated sewage into Cork Lower Harbour and clean up the harbour through its investment in the Cork Lower Harbour Main Drainage Project.

Road Closure from Monday 13 to Friday 7 September

To safely complete these vital works in the Passage West area, it is necessary to temporarily close a 90-metre section of road on the R610 in the vicinity of Passage West library for four weeks. Following a number of meetings with the local community and elected representatives, and the granting of a road closure application by Cork County Council, this road closure began on Monday, August 13th and will continue until Friday, September 7th.

Uisce Éireann and our contractors, Ward and Burke Group Ltd, are committed to working with the local community and businesses to ensure that local access is maintained and that Passage West remains open for business during this four week period.

Traffic management plan in place for the local community

Traffic management plans, including diversion routes, have been drawn up which take account of feedback received during meetings with the local community and submissions made to Cork County Council as part of the road closure application. Among other mitigation measure, a free shuttle bus will also be provided from either side of the works area to link in with Bus Eireann services (see details below).

At the most recent meeting with the community, on Friday August 10th, detailed information was provided in relation to the road closure, including diversion routes and information on parking and access to the village. We will continue to work with Cork County Council, elected representatives and the local community to address the concerns raised during the process of applying for the road closure licence or any issues which may arise over the coming four weeks.

Questions and Answers in relation to the road closure are available on our Cork Lower Harbour page. For any additional queries, please email corklowerharbour@water.ie.

Committed to ending the discharge of raw sewerage into Cork Lower Harbour

We would like to reiterate our commitment to working with the local community to minimise the impact of this essential work and would like to thank the people of Passage West, Glenbrook, Monkstown and all the Lower Harbour residents for their ongoing cooperation as we work together to deliver the Cork Lower Harbour Main Drainage Project and end the discharge of raw sewage into the Cork Lower Harbour.

20,000 homes and businesses will be connected to the new scheme

When all the Cork Lower Harbour Main Drainage works are complete in 2021, the project will treat all wastewater from Passage West, Monkstown, Ringaskiddy, Crosshaven, Carrigaline, Glenbrook, Shanbally, Coolmore and Cobh. This means 20,000 homes and businesses will be connected to the new scheme and that raw sewage will no longer be discharged into the Harbour. At present, the equivalent of 20,000 wheelie bins of sewage is discharged into the harbour every day.
