Celbridge to Newcastle Water Mains Replacement
Uisce Éireann and South Dublin County Council are carrying out joint projects between Celbridge, Co Kildare and Newcastle Co Dublin to provide a more reliable water supply, reduce high levels of leakage and reduce the risk of sewer flooding.
The Uisce Éireann works, which are being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme, involve the replacement of over five kilometres of old and damaged water mains with new modern pipes. The South Dublin County Council (SDCC) works involve the installation of 2.5 kilometres of surface water pipeline and four communications ducts.
This section of works will take place between Newcastle and Hazelhatch along R405 Hazelhatch Road.
The works will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’ water supply.
The works will be carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann and SDCC by GMC Utilities Group Ltd. Works as part of the Leakage Reduction Programme are expected to be completed in Q2 2027. The SDCC project has an expected completion date of Q3 2026.

What are the benefits of the works?
The benefits of the works include:
- A Reliable Water Supply – Replacement of water mains and service connections will reduce the instances of bursts and water outages and will ensure a reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area.
- Reduced Leaks – Replacement of water mains and service connections will eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.
- Improved Operation and Maintenance – These works will deliver cost savings by providing improved water network operation that will require less maintenance in the future.
- Increased Network Capacity – The delivery of these joint-projects will provide sufficient capacity in the network to cater for existing and future housing development in Celbridge and Newcastle.
- Reducing the risk of sewer overflow – This project will improve the capacity of the existing sewers, improving performance and reducing the risk of sewer flooding in the area.
Will customers be affected by the works?
To safely and efficiently deliver these works, a road closure is in place from the junction of R405 Hazelhatch Road with Loughtown Road and the junction of R405 Hazelhatch with Athgoe Road. Additionally, a stop/go system is in place on R405 Hazelhatch Road between the roundabout and Celbridge.
The works may involve some short-term water interruptions, and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water interruptions.
We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause.
