Uisce Éireann is commencing works on an upgrade of Castlemartyr Wastewater Treatment Plant

Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Cork County Council, is progressing works to upgrade the wastewater treatment plant at Castlemartyr, representing a €13.5million investment. EPS Ltd. has been appointed to deliver the project on behalf of Uisce Éireann and works will commence in the coming weeks.

Currently the existing wastewater treatment plant effluent does not consistently meet the standard required by the EPA licence. Some parameters of the licence cannot be achieved with the assets that are currently in place.

What is involved in this project?

  • The project involves the upgrade of assets at the existing wastewater treatment plant to serve a population equivalent of 3,200.
  • These works include: new inlet works, storm tank, secondary and tertiary treatment.
  • Connection to the existing outfall pipe to safely discharge treated wastewater into the River Kiltha.

What are the benefits of this project?

When complete, this project will;

  • Modernise and improve the performance of the wastewater treatment infrastructure in Castlemartyr.
  • Eliminate the discharge of poorly treated effluent.
  • Improve the quality of water discharged into the River Kiltha.
  • Increase the capacity of the wastewater treatment plant, which will accommodate further growth in the Castlemartyr area.
  • Safeguard human and environmental health.
  • Ensure compliance with National and European regulatory standards regarding the treatment of wastewater.

Next Steps

  • These works are expected to take 26 months and project is scheduled for completion in 2026.
  • There will be an increase in construction traffic in and around the vicinity of the wastewater treatment plant throughout construction.
